A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
