Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
