A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
