Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
